DEPRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH THE CHIEF COMPLAINT OF HEADACHE
Abstract
The patients whose chief complaints are headache have many other somatic complaints of depressive nature, and there have been studies on the psyculatric or emotional aspect of headache, particularly on the migrane syndrome. Some of them suggested that anxiety, hostility and/or depression could be regarded as associated emotional factors of headache. The author tried to evaluate depression in the headache patients by applying them a self-rating depression scale and by having clinical interviews with them. Of the total 106 headache patients, 40 patients showed depression score above 18. Mean score of total 106 patients was 17.58¡¾6.31, whereas that of normal controls was 8.33¡¾3.70. Both clinical interview and S. R. D. S. -score revealed that depression was significantly pronou¡©nced in headache patients than in normal controls. Therefore, whenever one occur to manage the headache patient without apparent organic cause it may be helpful to be: r in mind "depression".
